Orthodontics is the specialised branch of dentistry that deals with the diagnosis and treatment of problems caused by poor alignment of the teeth & jaws, and is carried out using different types of braces. Our practice specialises solely in Orthodontics.
An Orthodontist is a qualified dentist who has completed a further 3 years full time training on a recognised specialist training programme and is on the specialist register of the Dental Council of Ireland . Our orthodontists are also members of the Orthodontic Society of Ireland (O.S.I.) .
The best time for an initial orthodontic assessment is normally between seven and nine years of age. Seeing a child at this early age gives the orthodontist every opportunity to assess potential problems and allows the opportunity for early intervention where necessary
You do not need a referral from a dentist but if you do have a referral letter or X-Ray please bring it along to your consultation.
Your consultation will be carried out by your orthodontist and treatment coordinator. On arrival you will be asked to confirm some standard details such as address, date of birth etc. You will also be asked to complete a medical questionnaire. All information is naturally dealt with in the strictest confidence.
You will then meet your specialist orthodontist who will undertake a detailed examination of your face, jaws, bite and your teeth.. She may request orthodontic records to be taken which include two x-rays, a dental scan of all the teeth as well as a full set of facial and intra oral photographs.
After the orthodontist reviews the patient records she will have a detailed discussion with the patient and / or parents about the clinical treatment options. You will, of course, have a chance to ask any questions you may have. Consultation can take approximately 30 mins to 1 hour and 20 minutes depending on records taken.
Please visit our financial information page for all information regarding costs, payment options, tax back ect
The length of orthodontic treatment will vary hugely depending on several factors including the severity of the orthodontic problem, treatment complexity, patient compliance, treatment method ect
We provide options including metal fixed braces, tooth coloured fixed braces, and clear aligner treatment. We will tailor your treatment to your individual needs and preferences.
Aligners can offer a more discreet treatment, often less noticeable than traditional braces. They are usually a more comfortable option with less breakages and appointments
Using fixed appliances the orthodontist generally has more control over tooth movement & may be more appropriate in complex cases
During treatment, we schedule check-up appointments every 6–8 weeks for fixed appliances. Aligner appointments are generally every 12-16 weeks. We can also use DentalMonitoring technology to virtually asses your teeth every week without you attending the clinic.
Initially, patients may experience mild discomfort or irritation which is usually short lived. We will provide guidance on managing any discomfort at home.
Contact us promptly, and we will arrange an appointment for repair or provide advise and guidance.
Certain hard and sticky foods are to be avoided if you have fixed appliances as they can distort and break the brackets and wires. If you are wearing elastics as part of your treatment then certain foods with strong colouring such as curry and red wine might cause some staining and some patients find them best avoided.
Prior to treatment, we thoroughly discuss and consent any associated risks. With good cooperation, including regular attendance, maintaining good oral hygiene and following our instructions we minimise the risk of damage to your teeth.
It is very important that you continue to see your regular general dentist throughout your orthodontic treatment.
Following treatment patients are fitted with removable and / or fixed retainers. These, when worn and maintained as instructed, will keep your correction maintained.
